On Friday 28th of April, St John Rescue Corps was called out to assist the Civil Protection Malta in tackling a large fire which was consuming a recycling factory in Ħal Far industrial area. The smoke arising from the fire could be seen from localities which were miles away from this incident. The factory in question recycles several materials among which are combustible ones such as cardboard, wood and plastics.
Parts of the building collapsed due to the fire and intervention was initially carried from the outside so as to stop the fire from spreading to other combustible material situated outside. It took hours of strenuous conditions and more than 240,000 liters of water to subdue the flames.
The Corps responded to this call with a fire appliance, two vans, 17 firefighter volunteers and two support staff. The Corps would like to thank its volunteer members who deployed to this incident. These volunteers worked hand in hand with members of the Civil Protection Department and their professional attitude throughout the long hours of the incident was invaluable in controlling the fire.
